Spanish Grammar Explained · Lesson 10
Hay vs Está
Hay and está can both be translated as there is or is, but they do different jobs. Hay says that something exists: there is a park, there are three books, there is no milk. It never changes and it never takes el or la. Está and están say where a specific, known thing or person is: the park is nearby, my brother is here. A quick test: if el, la, mi, este or a name comes before the noun, use está; if you have a, some, a number or nothing, use hay. Ten worked examples with clear pronunciation.
