Privacy Policy

Pinglingo is a language-learning suite: a website, an iPhone and Android app, and a Chrome extension that adds clickable dual subtitles to YouTube. This policy explains what the suite collects and why. We keep it minimal and we don't sell your data.

What we collect

• Email address — only if you sign in. We use it for passwordless magic-link login and to tie your saved words to your account. No password is stored.
• Saved words — when you save a word, we store the word, its translation/part-of-speech, the sentence it appeared in, and the source video URL, so you can review them across the web, app, and extension.
• Subtitle and selected text — to show translations and per-word meanings, the extension sends the current subtitle line (or, in reading mode, the text you select) to our server, which translates and analyses it and caches the result so it's instant next time. The cached text isn't linked to you.
• A random device id — the extension generates a random identifier when it's installed. We use it to apply the free daily limit and to count how many installs are in use each day. It contains nothing about you, but if you're signed in we record it together with your account.
• Videos you watch with the extension, and how it performed — for each YouTube video you watch with the extension turned on, we record the video's ID, which kind of captions it had (uploaded by the creator or auto-generated by YouTube) and how clean they were, plus counts of what happened: lines shown, lookups that worked or failed, words saved, and errors. We use this only to find videos with poor captions and to fix problems in the extension. It's recorded with your device id, and with your account if you're signed in. We don't record what you watch without the extension, or anything outside YouTube.
• Your game progress — when you are signed in, we store the games you finish, your scores, your streak and the words you got right or wrong, so your progress is the same on the web and in the app.
• Leaderboard identity (app) — if you submit a score from the app, we store a random device id and the nickname shown on the leaderboard with that score. You don't need an account for this.
• Usage analytics — on the website and in the app we use Google Analytics / Firebase Analytics to count visits and see which games are played, finished or left, for example "game opened", "round finished", device type, country and app version. This is collected with a random identifier from your browser or app, not your name or email. The app does not use the advertising ID. We also keep a simple page-view count on our own server, which uses a one-way hash of your IP address and browser that changes every day.
• Microphone (app, optional) — the Pronunciation game asks for microphone and speech-recognition access so it can hear you say a word. Speech is recognised by your phone's speech service (on Android, Google's; on iPhone, Apple's), and we don't receive or store your voice recordings. You can say no, and every other game works without it.
• Subscriptions — purchases are handled by the App Store or Google Play. We never see your card details; we only learn whether a subscription is active.

Service providers

To provide translations, definitions, pronunciation, and login emails, subtitle/word text or your email may be processed by: Google Cloud (Translate & Text-to-Speech) and Google Analytics / Firebase (usage analytics), OpenAI / DeepSeek (word definitions), and Purelymail and Resend (sending login emails). They process this data only to perform their service.

What we don't do

No ads. No selling or renting your data. No advertising trackers. The only third-party analytics are Google Analytics and Firebase, described above. The extension runs on YouTube, and on other pages only when you turn on reading mode or look up a word there. It only talks to our own server (pinglingo.com) and YouTube's caption data.

Keeping & deleting your data

We keep your account and saved words until you ask us to delete them. Video and usage records from the extension are deleted after 90 days. In the Pinglingo mobile app you can delete your account yourself: open your account menu, choose Delete account, and confirm with the code we email you. That permanently removes your account, progress, streak, scores and saved words. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription bought through the App Store or Google Play; cancel it in your store account settings. You can also request deletion from the web, without the app, on our account deletion page, or by email. You can clear the extension's local settings any time by removing it from Chrome.
