How to play

  1. Read the English word at the top — that is the clue.
  2. Nine burrows sit in a three-by-three board. Moles pop up out of them, each holding a Spanish word on a little sign.
  3. Tap the mole that carries the translation of the clue, or press the number keys 1–9 (laid out like a number pad: 7 8 9 on top, 1 2 3 at the bottom).
  4. A right whack scores and brings the next clue. A wrong mole costs a heart and shows you the right word; the clue stays so you can still clear it.
  5. If the right mole goes back down before you reach it, nothing is lost — it pops up again soon. Clear all six clues before your five hearts run out; you hear each Spanish word spoken.

Questions

Is this Spanish whack-a-mole game free?

Yes — Whack-a-Word plays in your browser, on a phone or a computer, with no sign-up. Sign in only to save the words you meet to your review deck.

What happens if I miss the right mole?

Nothing is lost: it goes back down and pops up again within a few seconds. Only whacking a wrong mole costs a heart, but a clue you missed no longer counts as a clean clue.

How long do the moles stay up?

Long enough to read and hear the word — about a second and a half at first, a little less with each clue, never less than about a second.

Can I practise one topic?

Yes. Use the theme picker to draw the words from a single category — animals, food, the home and more.
