How to play

  1. Read the Spanish sentence with the blank, and the English translation beneath it.
  2. Four forms of ser and estar are thrown up the screen one after another and arc back down. Only one fits the blank.
  3. Drag your finger or mouse across the right form to slice it. A quick tap works too, and keys 1 to 4 slice the first to fourth verb from the left.
  4. Slice the right form and the blank fills in, the rule is shown and the whole sentence is read out. Slice a wrong form, or let the right one fall off the bottom, and you lose a heart and see why it was ser or estar.
  5. Clear all eight sentences before your five hearts run out.

Questions

Is this ser and estar game free?

Yes — Ser or Estar Slice plays in your browser, on a phone or a computer, with no sign-up.

What happens if I slice the wrong verb?

You lose a heart and your streak resets. The screen shows the form you cut, the form that was right and the rule, for example estar for feelings and moods. The right form keeps flying, so you can still finish the sentence, but it no longer counts as a clean sentence.

What if the right verb falls?

You lose a heart, the right form and its rule are shown and the sentence is read out, then the next sentence starts. Wrong forms that fall away cost nothing.

Which forms fly up?

The right form, the other verb in the same person (the real ser or estar test), and two forms from other persons, all from soy, eres, es, somos, son and estoy, estás, está, estamos, están.

Can I play without a touch screen?

Yes. Drag with a mouse, or press the number keys 1 to 4 to slice the first to fourth verb from the left that is in the air.
