How to play

Listen: a Chinese sentence plays, and its meaning is shown above it. The sentence is written below with one word missing. Tap it at any time to hear it again.
Nine burrows sit in a three-by-three board. Moles pop up out of them, each holding a Chinese word on a little sign.
Tap the mole that carries the word that fits the gap, or press the number keys 1–9 (laid out like a number pad: 7 8 9 on top, 1 2 3 at the bottom).
A right whack fills the gap, plays the whole sentence again and brings the next sentence. A wrong mole costs a heart and shows you the right word; the gap stays so you can still fill it.
If the right mole goes back down before you reach it, nothing is lost — it pops up again soon. Fill the gaps of all the sentences before your five hearts run out.

Is this Chinese fill-the-gap game free?

Yes — Whack the Blank plays in your browser, on a phone or a computer, with no sign-up. Sign in only to save the sentences you meet to your review deck.

What do the levels A1, A2 and B1 mean?

A1 sentences are short and use everyday words, A2 sentences are a little longer or use the past or the future, and B1 sentences use less common words and longer structures. Pick a level on the start screen.

What happens if I miss the right mole?

Nothing is lost: it goes back down and pops up again within a few seconds. Only whacking a wrong mole costs a heart, but a sentence you missed no longer counts as a clean sentence.
