How to play

  1. Read the English word at the top — that is the clue.
  2. Four Spanish words are thrown up the screen one after another and arc back down. Only one is the translation of the clue.
  3. Drag your finger or mouse across the right word to slice it. A quick tap works too, and keys 1 to 4 slice the first to fourth word from the left.
  4. Slice the right word to score and move to the next clue; slice a wrong one, or let the right one fall off the bottom, and you lose a heart.
  5. Clear all six clues before your five hearts run out — you hear each Spanish word spoken as you slice it.

Questions

Is this Spanish slicing game free?

Yes — Slice the Word plays in your browser, on a phone or a computer, with no sign-up. Sign in only to save the words you meet to your review deck.

What happens if I slice the wrong word?

You lose a heart and your streak resets, and the screen tells you which word was right. The right word keeps flying, so you can still finish the clue — but it no longer counts as a clean clue.

What if the right word falls?

You lose a heart and the answer is read out, then the next clue starts. Wrong words that fall away cost nothing.

Can I play without a touch screen?

Yes. Drag with a mouse, or press the number keys 1 to 4 to slice the first to fourth word from the left that is in the air.

Can I practise one topic?

Yes. Use the theme picker to draw the words from a single category — animals, food, the home and more.
