Por vs Para, learned by playing

The idea in one minute
Both words are often "for" in English. Ask what the "for" is doing. If it points back to a reason, a price, a length of time or a place you pass through, it is POR. If it points ahead to a purpose, a person, a destination or a deadline, it is PARA.

- Heading to: Salgo para Madrid. — I'm leaving for Madrid.
- Who it's for: Este regalo es para ti. — This gift is for you.
- By when: Lo necesito para el lunes. — I need it by Monday.
- In my opinion: Para mí, es difícil. — For me, it's difficult.
- Who you work for: Ella trabaja para una empresa grande. — She works for a big company.

What is the difference between por and para?
Both can be translated as 'for', but they look in opposite directions. Por looks back at the cause, the exchange, the time something lasted or the way something passes through: gracias por tu ayuda, pagué diez dólares por el libro, estudié por dos horas, caminamos por el parque. Para looks ahead at a goal: the purpose, the destination, the person something is for, a deadline or an opinion: estudio para aprender, salgo para Madrid, este regalo es para ti, lo necesito para el lunes.
How do I choose between por and para quickly?
Ask whether the 'for' answers 'because of what?' or 'to what end?'. If it points back to a reason, a price, a length of time or a place you pass through, use por. If it points forward to a purpose, a recipient, a destination or a due date, use para.
Do por and para ever mean the same thing?
Sometimes either is grammatical but the meaning changes. Trabajo por mi padre means I work in my father's place, and trabajo para mi padre means my father is my employer. Games that make you choose build exactly that feeling for the difference.
